Feeling Trapped and Unable to Move: The Freeze Response to Trauma - Dr. Jeffrey Rutstein
In the third of this 5-part video series on our 5 defensive states, Dr. Jeffrey Rutstein, PsyD, CHT, explores the Freeze defensive state: what it is, surprising ways it can show up in our everyday lives, and when your reaction to stressful situations doesn’t feel like a reaction at all.
When we can’t run or fight, we will often freeze. There’s nothing wrong with this response, but when it happens in our everyday lives, when we’re not being threatened, it can be exceedingly frustrating.
We feel trapped, immobilized, unable to move. In fact, we might even hold our breath. And while our nervous system might be trying to protect us, it’s effectively putting our life on hold. And for those of us who have experienced trauma, our Freeze response will be more pronounced.
As always, becoming aware of the defensive state you’re in—be it Freeze or any of the other four—is the first step toward healing.
